SA Wheelchair Rugby

A Movement, Not Just a Team

At SA WCR, we believe in the power of sport to change lives. We are the custodians of Wheelchair Rugby in South Africa, but more importantly, we are a family—a collective of athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters united by a shared vision.

Our goal is to become a leading force in global Wheelchair Rugby, building a community where:

  • Diversity is celebrated
  • Athletes of all backgrounds find a place to shine
  • Barriers to participation are replaced by bridges of opportunity

SA WCR is an Associate Member of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

What is Wheelchair Rugby?

Wheelchair Rugby, originally known as ‘Murderball’ and often referred to as ‘Quad Rugby’, is a fast-paced, full-contact team sport designed for athletes with disabilities. Open to all genders, it combines elements of rugby, basketball, and handball. The objective is simple: carry the ball across the opposing team’s try line to score points. Players use specially designed wheelchairs with reinforced frames and bumpers to navigate the court and make contact with opponents.

A unique combination of strength, strategy, and teamwork, Wheelchair Rugby is an exhilarating sport that promotes inclusivity, competition, and athleticism.
